We headed to these gardens in the afternoon with relatively low expectations. I had read a really nice write-up and since the weather was so beautiful, we thought a walk around some gardens might be a good way to salvage the day after 3-4 hours were wasted on car-related issues.
All our expectations were exceeded by miles! The place was crowded with mostly French families and there was a lot to do. First we were starving so we stopped by the tea room to have a late lunch. The room had a gorgeous view and was beautifully decorated. And had a peacock walking around inside. It seemed to resent our intrusion and stalked out shortly after we arrived.
My croque-monsieur was just so-so, but my dessert, proudly called La Dame de Marqueyssac was a sight to behold. The pear sorbet buried under all that whipped cream was my favorite.
After thoroughly enjoying our very late lunch, we spent the next 2 hours hiking up and down various trails - there are apparently 6 km worth of paths and trails. I believe we walked over 5 km of them! The gardens are situated on a hill and the views were great.
The formal gardens had both wild elements and lots of sculpted boxwoods.
And the chateau was nicely restored with a few rooms of period furnishing. What a country estate this would have been in the 19th century!
